Migration Success Story: MarketRock

"The transition from old to new APIs was transparent to the merchants. They felt the convenience right away, but they also felt safe knowing that the migration wouldn’t harm their business."

About MarketRock

MarketRock is an IT-based software company and Amazon software partner headquartered in Alessandria, Italy. Its powerful, flexible software solutions allow sellers on Amazon to organize product data, automate inventory publishing, and synchronize orders with inventory. In addition to software, MarketRock also offers managed e-commerce services.

MarketRock started its programmatic integration with Amazon in 2010 using Amazon Marketplace Web Service. In 2021, the company decided to migrate from MWS to SP-APIs.

Developing a phased approach

Selling Partner Developer Services worked with MarketRock to design a solution and a plan for implementation. Development took between two and three months, at which point MarketRock began migrating to the new SP-APIs.

MarketRock began with its two highest-priority APIs. First came the Reports API, used to help sellers receive and organize orders from Amazon. Then came Feeds, which allows sellers to generate ASINs directly from the MarketRock application. Once Reports and Feeds were complete, MarketRock integrated the APIs it uses less often, including Orders, Merchant Fulfillment, Catalog, and Products.

The company started the migration work early, leaving buffer time for last minute technical testing. Still, it took 8 months to complete the migration from start to finish, with the majority of the time dedicated to gradual migration of customer tokens.

Avoiding customer outages

Preserving functionality for sellers throughout the migration process was a key priority. To avoid potential outages, MarketRock migrated its tokens in batches, which took several weeks. This gradual process helped MarketRock maintain trust with its customers.

The Selling Partner Developer Services Team helped MarketRock along its migration journey, providing overall guidance and stepping in to resolve an access issue that arose early on. Though the initial authentication process proved complex, migration ran smoothly thereafter.

Noticeable performance improvements

Post-migration, MarketRock reported improvements in response time, speed, and overall performance. The company has been able to serve its customers in a faster, more uniform, and more efficient manner with SP-APIs. Customers can now automate repetitive tasks more easily and streamline their workflows, leading to better account performance and increased sales.
The new SP-APIs are performing way better. Integrating into API sections with the new SP-APIs is faster, the development cycle is more “standard,” and—especially when it comes to JSON-based messages—they’re flexible enough to implement just what is needed.

Planning for the future

MarketRock migrated its existing APIs 1:1, but the company is already planning to implement new features and APIs that weren’t supported by MWS.
The ability to push FBM order invoices to Seller Central is a new feature that we found useful. We also intend to integrate the A+ Content API to add rich marketing content to Amazon product detail pages.
